Terrick, Samuel

In Latin: Sacred to the memory of SAMUEL TERRICK, MA, Rector of the parish church of Wheldrake and Canon Residentiary of this metropolitan church, formerly domestic chaplain to that most honourable man STANHOPE, Ambassador to Spain, and then to the Most Reverend and Pious Bishop John Sharp. What his genius and virtue were, what power he had, both to entertain and instruct, you will judge, reader, when you are informed, that he was distinguished by great knowledge and a great understanding of both men and things, by an eloquence at once both sweet and vigorous, by life and manners grave and pious, by conversation pleasant and humorous, and by a sincere heart and a completely candid and benevolent mind. Blest with these endowments, he attracted the friendship of the good, and the esteem of all. All that knew him feel the loss of him, and the good bewail it with the most unaffected sorrow and regret. He died on the second day of January 1718/19, in the 51st year of his age.
