In Latin: Here lies Sir William Stewart, Knight, son of John Stewart of Shambellie, of a noble family among the Scots, in the county of Galloway. He honoured the dignity of his lineage by the splendour of his wealth as a merchant; he governed with the greatest fidelity St Bartholomew’s Hospital; and at last, in London, as Lord Mayor, he possessed such firmness of character and wisdom that even in the most difficult times the city's peace and liberty remained unharmed.
