Knight, Stephen

In Latin: Sacred to the memory of her most beloved father Stephen Knight, a gentleman of Essex. He married Margaret, the eldest daughter of Thomas Faldo, gentleman, descended from an ancient family in the county of Bedfordshire. He was the first clerk of the archives for the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, a position which he fulfilled with the greatest integrity until he was struck down by jealous fate. During the recent troubles in England he exposed himself to many dangers, working successfully in many matters for the good of the republic, remaining constant  in spirit and patient in losses. King Charles the First, pleased with his virtue, offered him a knighthood, which he refused; yet he reluctantly accepted the rank of commander, to which he was promoted in the very camp itself. He died on the 17th of April, in the year of our Lord 1664, aged 73.
