Ingram, Lionel

In Latin: Lionel Ingram, son of Arthur Ingram, knight, by his mother Mary, descended from the very noble Greville family. On account of the extraordinary endowments both of mind and body that he showed in his tender years, he was the hope and joy of his father, the care, constant concern, joy and principle comfort of his mother, the entertainment and the rival of his brothers, the special pride and ornament of the household and family, admired and beloved by all that saw him. Such was his demeanour before he arrived at six years of age, that he seemed to have been educated at court. After his second year, he was sometimes seen to weep, scarce ever heard to cry. Already a man in manners, he had the most perfect obedience to his parents. Even in the absence of his mother, and in respect of such things as he was most eagerly desirous of, he could neither be persuaded nor bribed to break his word to her. His proficiency in learning was sufficient for his years; his religion and piety went far beyond them; for being seized with a violent and fatal disease, even as this consumed his strength, the blessed little boy never ceased to pray, to implore the prayers of those standing by him, and to seek heaven for himself. Having shone upon the world like a happy star for about six years and three months, he withdrew himself, and peacefully went to rest in the Lord. He is rejoicing in heaven while leaving us sorrowful and, alas, remembering him all too much. [Translation courtesy of York Minster Records, adapted.]
