Qua (cum fratre, sorore, et multiplici prole) in eodem quiescit tumulo. Translation: Sacred to the memory and virtues of Nicholas Hooke, Esquire, laid to rest in that tomb which he himself built nearby - Behold the man, O traveller, destined to die, who wonderfully adorned himself with the highest probity in uncertain affairs, with sincere piety toward God, with proven loyalty toward both Charleses, with exceptional charity toward all; with most sweet manners and a highly refined intellect, cultivated with every ornament of elegant literature. This memorial, a token of affection, was set up by John Hooke, his surviving grandson — if anyone else could be, most sorrowful — sharing in grief and tears. He died 7 November 1712, aged 84. His most beloved wife Elizabeth Hooke died 29 November 1691. With her (together with a brother, sister, and numerous offspring) he rests in the same tomb.
