he was worthy of far greater ones.
A man of most elegant and pleasing intellect:
by his industry he enlightened the sciences,
by his liberality he advanced them.
Distinguished for learning
in theology, mathematics, and the art of music.
Cultivate his memory, posterity,
and from the works he published
recognize the principles of speech
and of harmony.
He died on 24 January 1697,
aged 82 years.
