Connould, John

In Latin: John Connould, A.M., vicar of this church for 25 years is buried here, I hope not without gratitude — a faithful divider of the Word of God, a strict guardian of ancient discipline, dear to all the pious and good.
If, even in death, the slanders of the malicious pursue him, may they do him no harm; their praises, had he received them, would have left a lasting stain on his memory.
He fell peacefully asleep on the 3rd day before the Nones of May [i.e., May 5th], in the year of our Lord 1708, in the 63rd year of his age.
In Greek: The expectation of death is painful for many, but the godly man profits from it. Cast away both laments and cries. He who has been buried here beneath the earth, lived well, and hopes to live someday among the blessed. (From a passage in the Anthologia Graeca Planudea, amended.)
