Brooke, John

In Latin: John Brooke, professor of theology, formerly fellow of University College, Oxford, the worthy Rector, first of the church of Emley, then of Silkstone, and afterwards of Bainton, precentor of this metropolitan church, and residentiary Canon. He was a  prudent and provident man, a frequent and learned preacher. He lived into his 49th year, fell asleep in the Lord on the 23rd March 1616, and is buried near this monument, waiting for the final resurrection of the saints. You were a shepherd loved by your flock, whom, in this learned city, you often fed with the bread of life: you here discharged the office of Precentor with distinction. Your term of life was short: your affectionate wife mourns your loss; accept these last honours that she pays you. (Translation courtesy of York Minster Records, adapted.)
