Transcription: Augustinus Briggs Armiger Urbis et Agni Icenorum bonus Genius, Vir Famae integrae, Iudicio sano, ingenio sagaci, praeditus, Pietatis, Charitatis, Comitatis Exemplar probatissimum, Civitatis aliquando Praefectus, diu senator, Cohortis urbanae dux militaris: Regni ad Concilium publicum 4ter cooptatus, Suffragio Civium unanimi Regi Servus (siquis alius) fidissimus; Ecclesiae Anglicanae filius pientissimus; Pauperum Patronus munificentissimus; Plebi et Patriciis Amicus desideratissimus, Filium cognominem, Honoris et amoris publici Haeredem reliquit. Cujus pietate hoc quicquid est Monimenti, Memoriae Saerum, Invidia carentis, Erectum est. Obiit 28° Augusti Anno AErae Christianae 1684, Aetatis 68.Cum uxore Eliz. Aldred ut diu iucunde vixit, Hic tandem placide quiescit.   Translation: Augustine Briggs, gent., The good Genius  of the City and of the People of the Iceni, A man of unimpaired reputation, Endowed with sound judgment and keen genius, A most proven example of Piety, Charity, and Courtesy, At one time Mayor of the City, long a councilman, Commander of the city militia; Four times chosen to the Public Council of the Realm, By the unanimous vote of the citizens. A most faithful servant to the King (if ever any was); A most pious son of the Church of England; A most munificent patron of the poor; A greatly beloved friend both to the common people and the nobles.   He left behind a son of the same name, The heir of his public honour and affection,   By whose devotion this monument—such as it is— Free from envy, Was erected to the memory of his parents.   He died on the 28th of August In the Year of the Christian Era 1684, At the age of 68.   Having lived long and happily With his wife Elizabeth Aldred, Here at last he rests in peace.
