Barton, Philip

In Latin: Beneath the lowest step of the sanctuary
lies Philip Barton, S.T.B.
Canon Residentiary and Subdean
of this Cathedral Church,
and also Rector for forty-four years
of the parish church of Buriton
in the county of Hampshire.
Born in the countryside of Worcestershire,
educated at Winchester School,
he later flourished as a Fellow of New College
among the men of Oxford.
A truly Christian preacher,
whose sermons, whenever they were delivered,
all who were present felt to be powerful, fruitful, and brilliant.
Exceptionally learned, yet a despiser of his own fame,
being modest beyond compare;
a man adorned with every virtue and duty,
whose sweet manners made his company
most pleasant as well as deeply erudite;
a mind capable of all things and finely polished;
a piety not simulated.
All who knew him admired and cherished him.
On the twenty-fourth day of June,
in the seventy-eighth year of his age,
1796, intent upon the life to come,
he willingly yielded to fate.
The mourning Maria Batchellor caused this sepulchral marble
to be placed for a meritorious brother
