Overall, John

In Latin: Sacred to God, Thrice-Greatest and Best.
And to the memory—which does not die—
of the Reverend Father, Lord John Overall,
a man most learned in every respect and beyond all praise.
He was first Lady Margaret Professor in the University of Cambridge;
afterwards Regius Professor of Divinity;
and then Master of St. Catherine’s College in the same university,
succeeding Dr. Whitaker.
From there he was advanced to the Deanery of St Paul’s in London;
and finally to this see of Norwich,
where he died
on the 12th day of May,
in the year of our Lord 1619,
having lived sixty-seven years;
and he is buried at the foot of this column.
This monument was set up
by his cousin
John Cosin,
formerly the Reverend Dr Overall’s
domestic secretary
and most devoted pupil,
but now Bishop of Durham,
in the year of our Lord 1669.
